16 things about Dobby
This is a washed out, scanned photo of me at work as Dobby on the release day of the final Harry Potter novel.
1.I love animals. For my fifth birthday- when you start school- my favourite uncle gave me a school bag. It was a red satchel with a crocodile texture. I thought it was real crocodile. As a result of my frenzied tantrum, I ended up sent to my bedroom on my birthday. Animals have always been my preferred companions over humans. Sorry humans!
2.My first music love was Abba. It was my mission in life to own an Abba t-shirt. For several years, every single opportunity I had to make a wish I wished for an Abba t-shirt. Birthdays, shooting stars, blowing dandelions, whatever…. By the time I got my wish (via a hand-me-down from a sisters friend) it was too late. They were on their way out and I didn’t care anymore. I am not sure what that taught me.
3.The ruling passion of my life has been books. I don’t remember learning to read- I just could. (Although that is obviously an inaccurate memory!) They ran out of readers to give me at school. I spent all my birthday and Christmas money on books. I became a (non practicing) librarian. I have been working with books for over 14 years. It is only in the last year or two I feel my love affair fading…and I don’t know why. But I do know it will only take a fling with something great to reignite it again.
4.The greatest ‘cultural’ (for wont of a better word) influences on my life have been the Doug Anthony All Stars & The Cure. To anyone outside of Australia (and to lots of people inside Oz, too) DAAS won’t mean anything. They are far, far too difficult a beast to explain adequately. But I wouldn’t have read Dostoyevsky if it hadn’t been for them. Or learnt to question, rebel, chop off my hair, be angry and laugh. Mostly laugh. The importance of The Cure is self evident. Well to me anyway.
5.I have more toys than I did as a child. I should stop now before I develop a problem. Oh dear, I’m already there, aren’t I?
6.As a child I collected mice. Not real ones (I had to wait until I was an adult to have real ones!) but ceramic, stuffed, an otherwise faux meece. Later, much later, I collected Victorian mourning jewellery. That got a bit expensive and I did lose interest. I don’t regard myself as a collector now, but that cabinet full of ponies and 100+ lps might just beg to differ. I find other peoples collections fascinating. The best TV show in Australia is called Collectors. Half hour once a week. It looks at collections, collectors & collecting. Big and small, museum quality and the boy down the street who collects leaves and rocks. Could watch that all day.
7.I love ice hockey. This is completely out of character with the rest of my life. (I was the kid always picked second last for team sports at school!) It came as a surprise to me and my friends & family thought I was joking. It came about by going to see a workmate play. I just wanted to know what he did. Watched him a few times and enjoyed it. About the third or fourth time I went I felt something inside click. Suddenly I was in love. The speed, the skill, the grace. It changed how I spend my spare time. I still watch him play, our state team play, and the Vancouver Canucks online. I have never put on a pair of skates in my life.
8.I don’t have many Big Dreams. I am more of the enjoy-the-small-day-to-day-wonders-of-existence kind of person. An oohhh- look-at-the-spotty-bug! kind of person. But I would like to get to Canada. I would like to see the Canucks play at home, I would like to see kids playing pond hockey, I want to see snow damn it! I can’t imagine the cold. Or big rivers, snowy mountains… Actually, it is mostly about the hockey.
9.I look younger than I am. Sometimes it is good, sometimes bad. It is hard to convey authority at work as an acting supervisor when you look 12. Mostly though, it is good. I will be 36 next month. Oh dear, I can feel a life crisis coming on!
10.I miss Saturday morning cartoons. I feel sorry for the kids today.
11.Towards the end of the last federal election campaign here, the then candidate, now PM, Kevin Rudd came into my store. Just to browse. In the history section. I was too shy to talk to him. But I didn’t want to encroach on his down time either. It must have been a busy time and he should just be left to browse and have a breather…. But, really, I was just too shy. I did wish him good luck as he left and he thanked me. I have always been shy. It is something I admire very much in my partner that he is a natural kind of guy who can talk to anyone. I am shy and not a people person. That is why I am in customer service.
12.I am not having children. I love them, absolutely get the joy involved, but have never felt a pressing need to have my own. My nephews were a blessing and I love them to bits. I have to admit to the world that if my partner was interested then I probably would have, but he isn’t and that doesn’t bother me.
13.When I was ab

while cleaning on Saturdays...
I trashed my ipod earbuds and discovered everything
sounds better with the old pair of huge headphones
I dug out of a drawer...
I have a thing for round corners.
They make me happy...
My new threadless shirt is green.
And has trees.
Which also makes me happy...
My camera is the only thing not skewampus.
Which sometimes feels like a reflection of my reality these days...
Where am I today? I wish that I knew
'Cause lookin' around there's no sign of you
I don't remember one jump or one leap
Just quiet steps away from your lead
I'm holding my heart out, but clutching it too
Feeling this short of a love that we once knew
I'm calling this a home when it's not even close
Playing the role with nerves left exposed
Standing on a darkened stage
Stumbling through the lines
Others have excuses
I have my reasons why
We get distracted by the dreams of our own
But nobody's happy while feeling alone
And knowing how hard it hurts when we fall
We lean another ladder against the wrong wall
And climb high to the highest rung
To shake fists at the sky
Others have excuses
I have my reasons why
With so much deception, it's hard not to wander away
It's hard not to wander away
